HISTORY

Bexhill gets its name from the Saxon Bexelei. Lei means a glade or wood cutting as in towns ending in Ley. The box tree grew here thus giving Bexhill its name. Primitive boats were discovered at Egerton Park but the town is mentioned in a Charter of 772. Bishop Oswald received land of King Offa, King of Mercia, and the Bishop built a church here.
