Originally a Celtic settlement in the 1st century, it was renamed Durovernum Cantiacorum when the Romans invaded. The Archbishop of Canterbury now heads the worldwide Anglian church after St Augustine became its first Archbishop in 597. In 1170 another Archbishop of this famous city, Thomas Beckett, was murdered, thus making Canterbury a place of pilgrimage. During 1910-12 the famous 9th Lancers were stationed in Canterbury. This regiment has won more VCs than any other mounted regiment. Capt Grenfell was serving with the 9th Lancers regiment when he won one of the first VCs in the Great War in August 1914
